Traditional Pueblo Embroidery: Textiles of many forms were introduced during the Spanish Inquisitions through the 1500’s. Origins of the Southwest Pueblo Embroidery began over 2000 years ago. Woven cotton or wool fabric was designed using additional embroidered patterns honoring the elements of nature. Today, designing ceremonial Pueblo regalia continues throughout the many Pueblo Southwest Tribes. A trade that is high in demand throughout our communities. With this in mind, the Walatowa Indian Education program will be introducing another workshop into our Indian Education curriculum for our students. This month, we will be facilitating a Traditional Pueblo Embroidery workshop, which introduces Walatowa High students to a rare form of Art. The Embroidery workshop will be lead by Mrs. Mable Fragua. Mrs. Fragua, who is one of our gifted Jemez Traditional Embroiders who is willing to assist us with introducing & working hands-on with the art to our Sophmores and Juniors. The goal is to address the history and importance of the learning a much needed trade, thus, working on their own piece of art: Dress strips, & Shirt strips to completion. ~ Carla Gachupin: WHCH Ed. Asst./Tribal Liaison
